**ED Questions Former MP Mimi Chakraborty in Illegal Betting App Case**
**New Delhi, September 15, 2025** – Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and actress Mimi Chakraborty, 36, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) today for questioning in connection to a money-laundering case linked to the alleged illegal betting application, 1xBet.
The ED is recording Ms. Chakraborty’s statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The investigation centers around Ms. Chakraborty’s alleged links to 1xBet through endorsements and financial transactions. The ED aims to clarify the nature and extent of her involvement with the controversial app.
The agency is currently investigating multiple cases involving illegal betting apps, which are accused of defrauding numerous individuals and investors of substantial amounts and evading significant taxes.
This investigation has already seen prominent figures questioned. Former cricketers Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan have previously been interviewed by the ED in connection to this case. Actress Urvashi Rautela, 31, who serves as 1xBet’s Indian ambassador, has been summoned to appear before the ED on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
1xBet describes itself as a globally recognized bookmaker with 18 years in the betting industry, offering bets on thousands of sporting events through its website and app, available in 70 languages.
These investigations come amidst growing concerns over the proliferation of online betting apps in India. The Union government has recently banned real-money online gaming, and market analysis suggests that the online betting app market in India is worth over $100 billion and growing at 30% annually, with 22 crore Indian users, approximately 11 crore of whom are regular users. The government told Parliament that it has issued 1,524 orders from 2022 till June 2025 to block online betting and gambling platforms.
The ED anticipates questioning more sportspersons and celebrities in the coming days as the investigation progresses.
