Mon Sep 15 05:27:59 UTC 2025: ## Kerala MLA Returns to Assembly Amidst Sexual Misconduct Allegations and Party Discord

**Thiruvananthapuram, September 15, 2025** – Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil made a controversial return to the Kerala Legislative Assembly today, ending his self-imposed exile following accusations of sexual misconduct that surfaced last month. His arrival has ignited a firestorm of criticism and exposed deep divisions within the Congress party.

Mamkootathil, accompanied by Youth Congress leaders, entered the Assembly as the House paid tribute to departed leaders, including former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan. He then took his designated seat, allocated to him as an independent block after his expulsion from the Congress Legislative Party (CLP).

The return has been met with condemnation from within and outside the Congress party. CPI(M) State committee member E.P. Jayarajan accused Mamkootathil of “challenging civil society” and “attempting to erode the dignity of the House,” emphasizing that he remains under suspicion for “serial sexually predatory behaviour.” Jayarajan highlighted Mamkootathil’s failure to legally challenge the allegations and the ongoing investigation by the Kerala Police Crime Branch.

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) also voiced strong opposition, with State secretary V.K. Sanoj stating that Mamkootathil was “brazenly defying” the Leader of the Opposition. He also pointed to a brewing “revolt” within the KPCC and CLP over the issue, with party leaders holding differing opinions.

Prior to his arrival, Mamkootathil faced threats of boycott from both the DYFI and the BJP should he enter the Assembly or his constituency in Palakkad.

Adding to the internal party turmoil, the KPCC leadership convened today to discuss disciplinary action against Mamkootathil. Meanwhile, a faction of loyalists within the Youth Congress has vowed to “protect” the legislator in both Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad, signaling the potential for further conflict.

The controversial return of Rahul Mamkootathil has not only reignited the focus on the serious allegations against him but has also laid bare the deep fissures within the Congress party, raising questions about its leadership and future direction in Kerala politics. The situation remains highly volatile, with potential for further developments in the coming days.
