**Chennai Conservancy Workers Plan Massive Protest Over Job Security and Wages**

**CHENNAI, India – September 13, 2025** – Chennai Corporation’s conservancy workers are gearing up for a large-scale protest on September 18th, demanding permanent government jobs and increased wages. The demonstration, which has gained the support of various political parties, follows a series of grievances voiced by the workers regarding their employment conditions.

Workers have submitted a letter to the police requesting permission for a rally from Rajarathinam Stadium to Langs Garden Road as part of the planned protest.

On Friday, a gathering of women conservancy workers near the Maniammai statue in Egmore was dispersed by police, with several workers detained and one, Mumtaj, hospitalized.

S. Kumarasamy, Advisor of the All India Central Council Trade Union, stated at a press conference that Deputy Mayor Magesh Kumaar had assured that outsourcing would not be implemented in the Tondiarpet and Anna Nagar zones. Kumarasamy urged the DMK government to ensure that the workers are treated with dignity and called for permanent jobs and an end to waste management outsourcing. He also accused the police of preventing workers from mobilizing support throughout the state.

Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam is reportedly scheduled to hold a meeting on Monday to discuss a potential package and welfare schemes for sanitation workers, suggesting the government is aware of the growing unrest. The situation remains tense as the September 18th protest date approaches.
