**Headline: Elderly Man Dies in Alpine Township House Fire**
**KENT COUNTY, Mich. —** An elderly man died early Tuesday morning in a house fire in Alpine Township. The fire was reported in the 3500 block of 4 Mile Road NW at approximately 1:17 a.m.
Firefighters arrived to find the home engulfed in flames. According to Alpine Township Deputy Fire Chief Jeremy Kelly, the intensity of the fire prevented crews from entering the home. The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was the sole occupant and did not survive.
“By the time we rolled up on scene, it was fully, fully involved,” said Chief Kelly. “We had to make a defensive strategy and at that point in time, with the way the fire was going through the windows, it’s unsurvivable.”
Investigators believe the fire started in the garage and quickly spread throughout the house. While the investigation is ongoing involving the sheriff’s office, MSP and Plainfield’s Investigation Unit, officials currently suspect the fire was accidental in nature.
Neighbors and friends are mourning the loss of the man, describing him as a friendly and helpful individual. Marvin Andree, a friend, shared that the man had been a long-time member of Berlin Baptist Church. “He was just a little old man, yeah, but he was friendly, very friendly.”
Andree added that the man had lost his wife three years ago and that the church community is now preparing to honor his memory.
Fire officials are using this tragedy as a reminder for residents to check their smoke detectors.
“The big thing is check your smoke detectors. A lot of times, it can give you that warning that you need,” said Chief Kelly.
