Thu Sep 11 10:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Tokyo Hit by Torrential Rain and Flooding, Disrupting Transportation
**Tokyo, Japan** – A sudden and severe thunderstorm struck Tokyo on Tuesday afternoon, causing widespread flooding and transportation disruptions. The intense rainfall led to the overflow of the Yazawa and Tachiai rivers in Setagaya and Shinagawa wards, respectively. Flood warnings were also issued for other rivers, including the Meguro River.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported record-breaking hourly rainfall in parts of the city, with Setagaya Ward experiencing 92 millimeters of rain by 2:30 PM and Haneda Airport in Ota Ward recording 88.5 millimeters by shortly after 4:00 PM. These are the highest hourly rainfall amounts ever recorded in those areas.
The torrential downpour significantly impacted transportation. The Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train suspended service between Shinagawa and Shin-Yokohama around 2:50 PM due to rainfall exceeding regulatory limits. Service was fully restored around 4:00 PM. Local train lines, including the Tokyu Meguro and Oimachi lines, also experienced temporary suspensions.
At Haneda Airport, ground operations were halted due to lightning strikes around 3:00 PM, preventing aircraft from taking off. Operations resumed at approximately 4:20 PM.
