Tue Sep 09 20:00:55 UTC 2025: **Headline: Maharashtra Opposition to Stage State-Wide Protest Against Controversial Security Bill**

**Mumbai, September 10, 2025** – The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition and civil rights activists are set to launch a state-wide protest this Wednesday against the Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, recently passed by the state legislature and currently awaiting the Governor’s approval. The planned demonstrations will take place in every district throughout Maharashtra.

The Congress party announced plans to hold a similar protest on Gandhi Jayanti, October 2nd, as part of a broader campaign to raise public awareness about the contentious Bill. Activist Ulka Mahajan stated that protests would extend to the taluka level, with the MVA mobilizing its members and engaging the public. These demonstrations build upon previous protest marches held across 78 locations in April and a mass gathering at Azad Maidan during the Monsoon Session of the Assembly.

Critics of the Bill claim that the Mahayuti government failed to conduct public consultations regarding the numerous objections raised. According to Ms. Mahajan, over 13,000 suggestions were submitted to the government, with over 9,500 explicitly calling for the Bill’s complete removal. Despite this, the government proceeded to pass the Bill without addressing concerns from civil society.

Opposition parties strongly condemn the Bill, arguing that it infringes upon fundamental rights to freedom of speech and assembly due to its vague definitions. The MVA claims the law grants the state excessive power to target peaceful protests, potentially silencing dissent.

The state government defends the Bill, asserting that it aims to prevent Maoist groups from influencing youth, professionals, and civil servants through affiliated organizations. The Bill allows the government to designate organizations as “unlawful,” and outlines offenses including membership, fundraising, management assistance, and involvement in illegal activities.
