**Madrid, Spain** – Over 400 additional Civil Guard officers will be deployed for the final two stages of the Vuelta a España in the Madrid region, Spanish authorities announced Wednesday. The bolstered security measures come in response to ongoing pro-Palestinian protests targeting the Israel-Premier Tech team throughout the 21-day race.

Demonstrations, triggered by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, have disrupted several stages of the cycling grand tour, raising concerns about the race’s completion. The central government’s representation in Madrid stated that the increased security detail aims to ensure the sporting event can proceed while respecting the right to protest. For Sunday’s finale, 1,100 police officers will be on duty, marking the largest security deployment since the 2022 NATO summit in Madrid.

Protesters have previously entered the race course, causing crashes and forcing the neutralization of Stage 11 in Bilbao. Stage 16 was also shortened after demonstrators blocked a road near the finish line. Cyclists have threatened to neutralize future stages if further disruptions occur.

While race organizers deny considering cancellation of the final stages, they have reportedly suggested Israel-Premier Tech consider withdrawing for the safety of other teams. The team, owned by Israeli-Canadian Sylvan Adams, has been praised by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for continuing to compete despite the protests.

The Palestinian cause has strong support in Spain, whose relationship with Israel has deteriorated recently.
