**Coimbatore, India – September 10, 2025** – The Poompuhar outlet in Coimbatore is bursting with color and tradition as it launches its annual Kolu doll exhibition-cum-sale, marking the lead-up to the festive season. The event, inaugurated on September 5th by District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, features a diverse collection of handcrafted dolls from 27 artisans across India.
Visitors can explore a vibrant array of dolls crafted from clay, wood, plaster of paris, ceramics, and terracotta, ranging in size up to two feet tall. Artisans have showcased new and unique depictions of Hindu gods and goddesses, some featuring a modern dull finish paint. Traditional wooden *marapachi* dolls are also on display, adorned as deities. This year also features new Channapatna doll varieties, boxes made of dry vilva fruits, return gifts, sea shell dolls, and terra cotta creations. Dolls originate from not only Coimbatore, but also neighboring states like Karnataka, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
T. Malathi, Manager of the Poompuhar outlet, anticipates strong sales for the exhibition. The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation aims to reach ₹75 lakh in sales this year, surpassing last year’s ₹62 lakh.
To encourage shoppers, a 10% discount is being offered on all doll purchases. The outlet is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.
The Kolu doll exhibition provides a valuable opportunity to support local artisans and embrace the cultural significance of the upcoming festive season.
