**King’s Landing (and HBO Max) will have to wait a while longer for the next chapter in the Targaryen saga.** Sources indicate that “House of the Dragon” Season 3 is facing a potentially significant delay, with production not expected to wrap until October. This extended timeline suggests a release date in mid-2025 at the earliest, potentially stretching the gap between seasons to a full two years.
The long wait time stems from the extensive post-production work required, similar to the 8.5-month period between the end of Season 2 filming and its eventual release.
Adding to the concerns, Season 4, intended as the series’ final season, is still yet to be written. If production continues at the current pace, fans could be waiting until 2028 for the conclusion of the Targaryen civil war.
This stands in stark contrast to the initial run of “Game of Thrones,” which consistently delivered ten-episode seasons on an annual basis (with the exception of a two-year gap before the final season). “House of the Dragon,” despite consisting of only eight episodes per season, isn’t meeting those timelines. In order to increase production quality, the naval battle that was supposed to be in season 2 finale was moved into the season 3 premiere.
However, hope isn’t lost for Westeros fans. Before Season 3 arrives, HBO plans to release “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” an adaptation of the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas, slated for early 2026. This series, which George R.R. Martin is reportedly highly enthusiastic about, is intended to be ongoing and potentially bridge the gap between “House of the Dragon” seasons.
Warner Bros. Discovery continues to view the “Game of Thrones” universe as a vital franchise, with numerous other spin-offs under consideration. While the quality of these future projects remains to be seen, the company is clearly committed to expanding the world of Westeros for years to come.
