Sat Sep 06 08:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Flash Flood Warning Issued for Phoenix Area; Residents Urged to Take Precautions
**Phoenix, AZ -** A flash flood warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Phoenix for Gila and Maricopa counties, effective until 7 p.m. MST today, Wednesday, September 3rd. Doppler radar indicates thunderstorms are producing heavy rain across the warned area, with between 0.5 and 1 inch already fallen and an additional 0.5 to 1 inch expected.
The NWS warns of life-threatening flash flooding impacting creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Affected locations may include Apache Lake and Tortilla Flat.
A flash flood is characterized by raging torrents after heavy rains and can develop suddenly and violently. The NWS emphasizes that flash floods can occur even in areas not currently experiencing rain.
Residents are urged to take immediate precautions. If in a flood-prone area, move to higher ground. If advised to evacuate, do so immediately. Use a battery-operated radio or television for the latest emergency information.
**Crucially, the NWS advises:**
* **”Turn around, don’t drown”**: Do not drive into flooded streets. Two feet of moving water can sweep away a car. If you encounter a flooded area, turn around and find an alternate route. Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
* Do not walk through floodwater. Even six inches of moving water can sweep you off your feet.
* Do not allow children to play in flowing water, which can hide rocks, trees, and debris.
* Campers and hikers should avoid streams or creeks.
The NWS issues flash flood warnings when flooding is imminent or occurring. A flash flood watch indicates that flash flooding is possible. Stay alert, turn on weather notifications, and monitor local news for updates.
