**Khartoum, Sudan** – A massive landslide has obliterated the village of Tarasin in Sudan’s western Darfur region, claiming the lives of more than 1,000 people, according to reports from the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), the rebel group controlling the area. The disaster struck on Sunday following days of torrential rainfall in the Marrah Mountains, a remote and challenging terrain.

The SLM/A has appealed to the UN and international aid organizations for assistance in recovering bodies, with the village reportedly “completely levelled.” The Sudanese Sovereign Council has acknowledged the tragedy and stated that resources are being mobilized. However, aid efforts are severely hampered by the region’s inaccessibility, exacerbated by the ongoing civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

“Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than 1,000 people,” the rebel group said in a statement. “Only one person survived,” it added.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has described the affected area as a “black hole” in Sudan’s humanitarian response, highlighting the difficulty in reaching those in need. The International Organization for Migration is urgently calling for safe access and increased aid.

The landslide adds to Sudan’s already dire humanitarian crisis, with famine declared in parts of Darfur. The ongoing conflict has displaced countless people, with many seeking refuge in the Marrah Mountains, now the site of this devastating natural disaster. The UN, and local emergency networks are facing significant challenges due to bad weather, lack of resources, and the ongoing conflict.

The tragedy underscores the vulnerability of communities in Darfur, caught between the ravages of war and the increasing threat of climate-related disasters.
