Sharjah, UAE – Afghanistan rebounded from a previous defeat, securing a convincing 38-run victory against the United Arab Emirates in the T20I tri-series held in Sharjah on Sunday. The win was also made special by Captain Rashid Khan, who became the leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals.
Afghanistan, after winning the toss and batting first, set a target of 188/4. Sediqullah Atal (54) and Ibrahim Zadran (63) formed a solid partnership to help them build a competitive score. Azmatullah Omarzai (20*) and Karim Janat (23*) provided a late surge to take the score to 188.
The UAE’s chase began strongly with captain Muhammad Waseem’s explosive 67, supported by Rahul Chopra’s unbeaten 52. However, the rest of the batting order failed to gain any momentum. Afghanistan’s bowling attack, led by Rashid Khan (3/21) and Sharafuddin Ashraf (3/24), restricted UAE to 150/8.
Rashid Khan’s record-breaking performance saw him surpass Tim Southee to become the all-time leading wicket-taker in T20Is, with 165 wickets.
This victory puts Afghanistan back in contention in the tri-series after their initial loss to Pakistan.
