**Israel Widens Gaza Offensive Amid Rising Casualties and International Condemnation**

Israeli forces are pressing further into northern and central Gaza, targeting areas like Zeitoun and Shijaiyah, known Hamas strongholds. Zeitoun, once a thriving neighborhood, has been reduced to rubble, declared a “dangerous combat zone” by the Israeli military. Gaza City, considered Hamas’s political and military center, is also sheltering hundreds of thousands of civilians facing combat and famine.

The military’s actions have resulted in a surge of casualties. Hospitals across the Gaza Strip report at least 47 deaths since dawn on Tuesday, with Israeli strikes in Gaza City claiming at least 26 lives. A strike on a residential building in Tel al-Hawa wounded 28, while another overnight strike killed 15, including children. “We were sleeping safe and sound in our home, and then we suddenly woke up to the sound of banging and rising smoke,” said Sana Drimli, a resident of the targeted building. “We woke up to see what happened to us and check in on our children and discovered that everyone around us is dead.”

Further south, hospitals in Khan Younis and Nuseirat report receiving 22 casualties from Israeli airstrikes and gunfire near distribution sites and UN convoys. Over 2,300 aid seekers have been killed in recent months, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, including those seeking assistance from the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

Reservists protested the call-up in Tel Aviv, questioning the offensive’s political motives and its likelihood of achieving its goals. Despite the potential for imprisonment, some are organizing resistance to the call-up.

Gaza City is experiencing famine, according to international food crisis authorities. 185 people died of malnutrition in August, the highest monthly count in months. The Gaza Health Ministry reports a total of 63,633 Palestinian deaths and 160,914 injuries in the war, with women and children comprising roughly half of the casualties.

The war began with a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in 1,200 deaths and the taking of 251 hostages. 48 hostages remain in Gaza, with approximately 20 believed to be alive.
