Thu Jul 03 23:00:00 UTC 2025: ## I-70 Reopens After Fatal Fiery Crash Snarls July 4th Weekend Traffic
**DENVER, Colo. -** All lanes of Interstate 70 westbound have reopened as of 5:15 p.m. Thursday evening following a fatal multi-vehicle crash that caused significant delays and a complete shutdown earlier in the day. The Colorado State Patrol confirmed the reopening of both I-70 and U.S. 40 westbound, urging drivers to “continue to drive safely as traffic returns to normal flow.”
The incident, a fiery collision between a 2021 RAM truck pulling a trailer and a Freightliner semi-truck also hauling a trailer, occurred around 1 p.m. near mile marker 218, prompting the closure of I-70 in both directions between Exit 205 (Dillon/Silverthorne) and Exit 216 (Loveland Pass). The accident resulted in a severe vehicle fire and tragically claimed the life of an occupant and a dog traveling in the RAM truck, according to CSP.
The closure created major disruptions for holiday travelers heading to the mountains for the long Independence Day weekend. The Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel, typically seeing around 32,000 vehicles daily, anticipates a surge to over 50,000 vehicles on holiday weekends like this one. Initially, westbound travelers were turned around at the Beaver Brook exit near Floyd Hill.
Motorists were strongly encouraged to avoid westbound I-70 and southbound U.S. 285. Alternate routes along U.S. 6 were also rerouted back to 70.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
