The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a supplementary chargesheet in the 2021 murder case of BJP worker Abhijit Sarkar during post-election violence in West Bengal. The chargesheet names Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Paresh Pal and two city councillors, Swapan Samaddar and Papiya Ghosh, along with 18 other individuals. The CBI took over the investigation following a Calcutta High Court order. The agency claims to have gathered substantial evidence, including CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts. **CBI Charges TMC MLA, Councillors in 2021 BJP Worker Murder Case**

**Kolkata, July 3, 2025** – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a supplementary chargesheet implicating a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA and two city councillors in the 2021 murder of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Abhijit Sarkar in Kolkata. The chargesheet comes almost four years after the incident, which occurred amidst post-election violence in West Bengal.

TMC MLA Paresh Pal from Beliaghata Constituency, along with councillors Swapan Samaddar (Ward 58) and Papiya Ghosh (Ward 30), have been named in the chargesheet. The CBI took over the investigation in August 2021 following a Calcutta High Court order.

According to the CBI, 18 additional individuals have been included in the chargesheet, which was submitted to a court in Sealdah on June 30. The agency claims to have seized CCTV footage, questioned eyewitnesses, and consulted with the victim’s family during its investigation. Just a week ago the prime accused in the case Arun Dey was arrested by CBI officials after a tip off.

“To see the CBI chargesheet after so many years, we feel relief,” said BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar. He has accused TMC of barbaric behavior, while TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has dismissed the chargesheet as politically motivated ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

The family of the deceased, while acknowledging the development, stated that they will only consider it complete justice once all those accused are arrested.
