**Wimbledon, England** – Ollie Tarvet, the world number 733 making his Grand Slam debut, is quickly becoming a fan favorite at Wimbledon after his first-round victory against Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi. The 21-year-old Brit, who prefers to be called Ollie, not Oliver, is now preparing for a daunting second-round match against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Centre Court.
“I usually only get called Oliver when my mum is annoyed at me,” Tarvet joked.
The US college student, studying communications and marketing at the University of San Diego, sees the match against Alcaraz as an opportunity rather than just an experience.
“I don’t really like the word ‘experience’ because I feel like then you’re just there to almost just spectate; you don’t really have the expectation to win.”
While acknowledging the challenge, Tarvet remains confident. “I feel like I’ve been quietly confident this whole tournament and it’s got me to where I am. A big thing for me is just playing the ball, not the player.”
Tarvet’s father, Garry, expressed his disbelief and excitement, noting the significant step up from smaller crowds to the 15,000 expected on Centre Court.
Tarvet’s journey to Wimbledon success wasn’t always clear-cut. Despite excelling in football and cricket, he ultimately chose tennis, honing his skills at the Unique Tennis Academy in London and later at the University of San Diego. He is one of several British players finding success through the American college system.
“Not many players are ready to play pro tennis at 18 and go to places where not many people watch, and it’s financially very difficult as well,” said LTA men’s national coach Mark Hilton, highlighting the benefits of the college route.
Tarvet’s run to the second round guarantees him significant prize money, although NCAA rules limit how much he can claim. Known for his fiery on-court demeanor, Tarvet’s shouts of “Gareth!” during qualifying week have added a touch of intrigue to his rising star. He faces Alcaraz on Wednesday.
