**Melbourne Childcare Worker Faces Child Rape Charges, Hundreds of Children Urged to Undergo Testing**

Melbourne, Australia – Health authorities are urging approximately 1,200 children to undergo testing for infectious diseases following the arrest of a Melbourne childcare worker on multiple child abuse charges, including child rape. Joshua Dale Brown, 26, was taken into custody in May and is facing 70 charges related to alleged abuse against eight children, including a five-month-old, between April 2022 and January 2023.

Brown had worked at approximately 20 childcare centers since 2017, prompting a widespread notification effort to parents of children who may have been in his care. Health officials are recommending testing as a precautionary measure due to the nature of the alleged offenses.

The eight children who police allege were harmed were all under the age of two and attended one childcare center in a suburb of Melbourne. Brown is accused of child rape and sexual assault offenses, as well as producing and transmitting child abuse material. Detectives are also investigating alleged offences by him at a childcare centre in Essendon, another Melbourne suburb, as a priority.

Police confirmed that Brown possessed a valid Working with Children Check and was employed as a childcare worker at the time of his arrest. According to authorities, Brown was not previously known to them and they believe he acted alone, with the alleged offenses confined to Victoria.

“It’s very important to ensure that every parent out there that has a child in childcare knows who he is and where he worked,” said Victoria Police’s Janet Stevenson, explaining the unusual decision to reveal Brown’s identity.

While Chief Health Officer Christian McGrath declined to comment on whether Brown had tested positive for sexually transmitted infections, he confirmed that the nature of the alleged crimes warranted screening for infectious diseases in some children. He assured that infections children may have been exposed to are treatable with antibiotics. Approximately 2,600 families have been contacted.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan expressed her outrage, stating, “My heart breaks for the families who are living every parent’s worst nightmare.” She added that a dedicated website has been established to support those affected.

Brown has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court in September. He is yet to enter a plea.
