**Rangers’ Mahle Diagnosed with Rotator Cuff Strain, Trade Value Dips**
ARLINGTON, TX – Texas Rangers starting pitcher Tyler Mahle has been diagnosed with a rotator cuff strain, General Manager Chris Young announced Tuesday. Mahle, who has been on the injured list since June 12th, will be shut down for the next two weeks, effectively ruling him out of action before the July 31st trade deadline.
While Young downplayed the severity of the long-term concern, the injury is a blow to the Rangers’ pitching rotation. Mahle has been a valuable asset, posting a 2.34 ERA across 77 innings in 14 starts.
The injury also casts a shadow over the Rangers’ potential activity in the trade market. Currently two games under .500 and vying for a Wild Card spot, the team’s direction at the deadline is uncertain. Mahle, in the second year of his contract, was a potential trade chip. His current condition significantly diminishes his trade value.
Ironically, Mahle’s injury could provide the Rangers with increased financial flexibility at the deadline. With a reduced likelihood of reaching performance-based incentives in his contract, the team could have several million dollars more to work with under the luxury tax threshold.
Despite the added financial breathing room, the Rangers’ starting rotation is now thinner. With Nathan Eovaldi’s recent return from the injured list bolstering the staff alongside Jacob deGrom, Kumar Rocker, Jack Leiter and Patrick Corbin, the team will need continued health from its remaining starters to remain competitive in the playoff race.
