**5G Rollout Gains Momentum in Colombia, Led by Claro**
BOGOTA, COLOMBIA – October 26, 2023 – Colombia’s 5G network is expanding rapidly, with 1,433 operational sites out of a total of 29,820 deployed across the country. According to data from the regulatory agency CRC, America Movil’s Claro is dominating the 5G landscape, operating 92.2% of the current 5G sites. The remaining sites are managed by the joint network of Tigo and Movistar.
The deployment of 5G began in February 2024, following spectrum auctions held in December 2023. Claro Colombia, WOM, Telecall, and the Tigo-Movistar consortium each secured 80MHz in the 3.5GHz band during the auction.
While Claro leads the charge, other players are at different stages of their 5G journey. WOM, which recently emerged from insolvency proceedings, is slated to begin its 5G rollout in the second half of the year. Telecall, however, faced a setback when its request to partially revoke its 5G spectrum allocation was rejected by the ICT ministry (Mintic). Mintic has also initiated two administrative actions against Telecall for non-compliance with its obligations.
Currently, 5G coverage reaches 19% of urban areas in Colombia. The capital city, Bogotá, boasts the highest 5G penetration at 69.2%, followed by Medellín (52.9%), Cali (52.6%), Barranquilla (32.9%), and Cartagena (17%).
While 5G gains traction, 4G remains the dominant technology. A substantial 94.5% of the total sites operate 4G, 76% run 3G, and 25% still use 2G. Impressively, 4G coverage is available in 97% of local population centers. In the central region, where 4G coverage is particularly strong, Claro leads with 98.6% coverage, followed by Tigo (92.8%), WOM (84.1%), and Movistar (79.8%).
This massive infrastructure project represents an investment of US$80 million.
