Sun Jun 29 21:14:30 UTC 2025: **Bolsonaro Rallies Supporters Amid Coup Plot Allegations, Potential Prison Time**

**Sao Paulo, Brazil** – Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, facing serious legal jeopardy related to an alleged coup plot, addressed thousands of supporters at a rally in Sao Paulo on Sunday. The rally comes as Bolsonaro is accused of planning to overturn the 2022 election result that saw Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva elected to the presidency.

Bolsonaro, who led the country from 2019 to 2022, faces five charges and potentially years in prison if convicted. Thirty-three of his allies have also been charged in connection with the alleged plot. He has denied any involvement, claiming the charges are politically motivated to prevent him from running in the 2026 elections. He is currently banned from holding office until 2030 due to a ruling by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, citing abuse of power and false claims about the country’s voting system.

Addressing the crowd, Bolsonaro asserted his innocence, stating, “I’m not obsessed with power, I’m in love with my country,” and emphasizing his faith, freedom, and the support of the Brazilian people as his strengths.

His legal troubles stem from an alleged attempt to keep him in power after the 2022 election. In January 2023, a mob of his supporters, dubbed “Bolsonaristas,” stormed government buildings in Brasilia, urging military intervention to depose Lula. The incident drew parallels to the January 6th Capitol riot in the United States.

While Bolsonaro was in Florida at the time of the riots, opponents accuse him of inciting the violence. Police have characterized the demonstration as an uprising and an attempt to force military intervention. Separately, police have called for Bolsonaro to be charged with illegal espionage during his presidency.

Sentencing in the coup plot case is expected in the second half of the year. Legal experts say Bolsonaro could face up to 12 years in prison if found guilty. While Bolsonaro has called for numerous protests, attendance has dwindled in recent months. According to estimates, approximately 45,000 people attended the most recent rally in April, significantly less than the February demonstration.

With Bolsonaro’s political future uncertain, Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas, a former Bolsonaro minister, is seen as a leading contender to represent conservatives in the 2026 presidential election.
