Sun Jun 29 13:00:00 UTC 2025: **Phillies Outfielder Max Kepler Expresses Frustration Over Limited Playing Time Against Left-Handed Pitchers**

ATLANTA – Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Max Kepler is voicing his discontent over his limited opportunities against left-handed pitching, despite being told he would be the everyday starting left fielder upon signing a one-year, $10 million deal this offseason.

Kepler, brought in to bolster the Phillies’ offense against lefties, has started only three of 24 games against left-handed starters this season. In contrast, he has started all 58 games against right-handers.

“I signed here being told that I was going to be the starting left fielder,” Kepler stated. “The everyday starting left fielder. So, there’s my answer. That’s why I came here.”

Manager Rob Thomson acknowledged Kepler’s frustration, stating, “I see where the frustration is, because these guys want to play — and that’s a good thing.”

Kepler has struggled against both lefties and righties this season, slashing .222/.265/.356 against left-handed pitchers and .205/.307/.389 against right-handers. He believes the inconsistent playing time has impacted his performance.

“I think I play my best game when I’m getting routine and consistent playing time,” Kepler said. “But the hardest thing to do in this game, for me, is go out and play with inconsistent opportunities.”

Thomson defended his approach, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus and trusting one’s abilities regardless of playing time. The Phillies manager indicated that the team would continue platooning, at least in left field, despite Kepler’s clear desire for a more consistent role. The team also platoons at second base and center field.

“Case by case,” Thomson said on if he will platoon.

Kepler said that if platooning is his role, “then transparently, I’ll take it on and hope to make the most of it.”

The Phillies may explore outfield options ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, with internal prospect Justin Crawford emerging as a potential call-up candidate.
