Spielberg, Austria – Lewis Hamilton briefly led the Austrian Grand Prix amidst a flurry of pit stops and early drama. The race started with a significant incident as rookie Kimi Antonelli collided with Max Verstappen on the first lap, forcing both drivers into retirement.
The Williams team confirmed that Carlos Sainz did not start the race due to an unspecified issue with Alex Albon’s car, which later was retired for investigation.
McLaren’s Lando Norris started from pole and initially led, aiming to close the gap to his teammate Oscar Piastri in the drivers’ championship. At one point Norris led by six seconds. Norris went on to lose the lead to Oscar Piastri who then pulled into pit. Norris re-emerged in fourth after his stop, hampered by a slow front-left tire change. Piastri locked up in turn four. The McLarens are putting on a show.
Various pit stop strategies throughout the race led to shifting positions. Lewis Hamilton briefly took the lead during this period before making his own stop, emerging in sixth. George Russell pitted for fresh medium tires.
Sauber had some back and forth between Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg, after both having stopped. Bortoleto was given the go ahead to move infront of Hulkenberg into eighth place.
Alpine’s Pierre Gasly expressed frustration over team radio about a lack of grip, though he remains in the points.
Off-track, the Austrian Grand Prix’s future on the Formula 1 calendar is secured until 2041.
