Sat Jun 28 07:08:02 UTC 2025: **Global Refugee Crisis: One in Three Refugees Are Children**
**[City, Date]** – A new report highlights the alarming reality that children constitute a significant portion of the global refugee population. Out of the 41 million refugees worldwide, a staggering 13.3 million are children, according to the UNHCR. This means that 33 out of every 100 refugees are children in need of international protection.
The report emphasizes the distinct challenges, vulnerabilities, and resilience of refugee children, visualizing the situation as if there were only 100 refugees globally, 33 would be children. While the division between boys and girls is relatively equal, refugee children often face gender-specific hardships, including gender-based violence and physical abuse.
The majority of child refugees are aged 5-11 years, followed by those aged 12-17 years and 0-4 years. Each stage of childhood brings unique risks, including malnutrition, illness, disruption to education, and mental health issues exacerbated by trauma.
The report also sheds light on the journeys undertaken by refugee children, many of whom have travelled thousands of kilometers to reach safety. These journeys are often fraught with danger, as illustrated by the story of “Sameer” (not his real name), who fled Afghanistan at the age of 17 after the Taliban took power. Sameer endured police beatings at country borders and spent months in harsh conditions before finally reaching the United Kingdom.
Mental health experts emphasize the importance of stability and connection in helping refugee children cope with trauma. While some children receive the support they need to thrive, others face additional challenges, such as being placed in unsuitable accommodations or separated from family members.
Despite the challenges they face, many refugee children demonstrate resilience and a determination to overcome their circumstances. As Sameer stated, “With the passage of time, I became used to the situation and I feel confident and fine now. And I hope, whatever problems or difficulties I face in the future, I will overcome and hopefully things will get normal.”
