**Tripura BJP Leadership Election Put on Hold Amid Internal Divisions**
**NEW DELHI – June 28, 2025** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has abruptly put on hold the election process for a new president of its Tripura unit, just hours after announcing the schedule. The decision, made following a phone call from BJP’s national general secretary (organisation) B. L. Santhosh, exposes deep divisions within the state party.
Sources within the BJP confirm that the postponement stems from a disagreement between Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and the national leadership over the choice of candidate. Mr. Saha is reportedly advocating for either Tinku Roy, a Minister in his government, or spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya. However, the party organization favors Bhagwan Das, a former Minister and current MLA, who is considered close to former Chief Minister Biplab Deb.
This internal conflict is unwelcome news for the BJP, which has already been struggling to complete organizational polls nationwide. The BJP’s internal election processes has been delayed for over a year and Current BJP president and Union minister J. P. Nadda is serving an extension of his term because of the party’s inability to complete the polling process amid growing differences between the BJP and its ideological parent, the RSS over who the next national president of the BJP should be.The delays are further complicated by ongoing disagreements between the BJP and its ideological parent, the RSS, regarding the selection of the next national president.
According to the BJP’s constitution, a national president can only be elected once at least 50% of all newly constituted state and Union Territory party units have completed their election processes. Out of 37 state units, only 14 have concluded their electoral processes so far, falling short of the required quorum. The Tripura election, along with anticipated completions in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, had offered hope of meeting this technical requirement before the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Despite the setback, a BJP source expressed optimism that the Tripura issue will be resolved quickly and the party’s internal deadlines can still be met.
