Fri Jun 27 12:39:37 UTC 2025: **Mexico Threatens Legal Action Against SpaceX Over Rocket Debris**
**Tamaulipas, Mexico** – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is threatening to sue Elon Musk’s SpaceX after debris from a recent Starship rocket launch in Texas landed in Mexico. The incident follows a “catastrophic failure” of the Starship 36 rocket on June 19 at the Starbase launch facility near the US-Mexico border.
Sheinbaum stated that “contamination” had been detected in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, roughly 300km (190 miles) from Starbase, and that officials are reviewing the environmental impact. Tamaulipas governor, Americo Villarreal Anaya, has echoed concerns, saying the internationally required distances are being examined so that there is no risk to urban centers. Mexican officials are looking into whether international laws have been violated.
SpaceX has responded, claiming that attempts to recover the debris, which they assert remains their property, have been hindered by “unauthorized parties trespassing on private property.” The company also maintains that the debris poses “no hazards to the surrounding area,” citing independent tests indicating no chemical, biological, or toxicological risks. They have requested assistance from the Mexican government in the recovery efforts.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about the dangers of space debris. The Starship launch was the fourth failure of SpaceX this year. Previous incidents include airlines having to divert flights to avoid falling debris and space debris falling onto a village in Kenya.
While the likelihood of being struck by falling debris is currently low, studies suggest the amount of uncontrolled re-entries of space objects is increasing, potentially posing a greater risk to aircraft. The European Space Agency estimates that at least three intact human-made objects fall back to Earth daily. Experts have also warned that while there are millions of pieces of space debris in orbit, there are no international laws in place for dealing with it.
