**Meaux, France** – A British man is facing serious charges after allegedly orchestrating a mock wedding involving a nine-year-old Ukrainian girl at Disneyland Paris. The 39-year-old, whose name has not been released, is accused of fraud, breach of trust, money laundering, and identity theft in connection with the elaborate event.
French prosecutors confirmed the man is a convicted sexual offender wanted in the UK for violating the terms of his registration. He was arrested on Saturday morning after police were alerted by an extra hired to play the girl’s father. The extra claimed he was paid €12,000 for the role and only realised the bride was a child at the last moment.
The mock wedding involved around 100 extras and reportedly cost the organiser over €130,000. He allegedly used a false Latvian ID to hire Disneyland Paris for several hours outside of opening hours and was even professionally made-up to disguise his appearance.
While the young Ukrainian girl, who arrived in France just two days prior, was found to be unharmed, the incident has sparked outrage. A woman hired as an extra told BFMTV of her shock upon seeing the child in a wedding dress. “When I saw [it was a] child – it was horrific,” she said.
Three other individuals were initially arrested, including the girl’s 41-year-old mother, a 24-year-old Latvian woman scheduled to play the bride’s sister, and a 55-year-old Latvian man. As of Tuesday, only the British man remained in custody. The Latvian woman is now considered a witness in the investigation.
Prosecutors have stated that Disneyland Paris was unaware of the true nature of the event and was deceived by the organiser. The motive behind the staged wedding remains unclear.
