**SEATTLE** – Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in the Club World Cup knockout stage with a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC on Monday, topping Group B. After a surprising loss to Botafogo earlier in the tournament, the French champions needed a win to advance and delivered with goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi.
Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a fortunate deflection off his back after a Vitinha shot. Hakimi sealed the win in the 66th minute, capitalizing on Seattle’s defensive lapse to slot the ball home.
“It’s a happy day,” said PSG midfielder Joao Neves. “It feels good. We are going to Atlanta. We will try to put our idea into the game no matter what team we are playing against.”
The loss eliminated Seattle from the competition. Despite a strong start, the MLS side couldn’t convert their early pressure into goals.
“It was a good start,” said Seattle coach Brian Schmetzer. “We knew we were going to have to come out and be ready for the best league team in Europe so our guys came out into the game fired up.”
PSG will now face the Group A runner-up in Atlanta on Sunday, while Botafogo will play the Group A winner in Philadelphia on Saturday.
