Tue Jun 24 01:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Palmeiras Overcome Weather Delay, Defeat Al Ahly in Club World Cup Clash

**EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.** – Brazilian side Palmeiras secured a 2-0 victory over Egypt’s Al Ahly in a Group A Club World Cup match at MetLife Stadium on Thursday, despite a lengthy weather delay. Two goals in quick succession early in the second half secured the win, first with a Wessam Abou Ali own goal in the 49th minute and then a Jose Manuel Lopez strike in the 59th.

The game was then halted for 50 minutes due to concerns over thunderstorms, despite a lack of obvious signs of inclement weather. Referee Anthony Taylor ordered both teams off the field and fans were instructed to seek shelter.

Upon the restart, Palmeiras maintained their dominance. The first half was a tightly contested affair, played at a surprisingly high tempo despite the midday kickoff in sweltering heat. Palmeiras’ teenage sensation Estevao showcased his talent, giving the Al Ahly defense trouble with his pace and skill.

Al Ahly, who previously drew 0-0 with Inter Miami, struggled to contain Palmeiras in the second half. The deadlock was broken when Abou Ali headed Anibal Moreno’s free kick into his own net. Ten minutes later, Lopez finished off a swift counter-attack, expertly placing the ball past the Al Ahly goalkeeper.

Raphael Vega of Palmeiras initially received a red card for a tackle on Ahmed Zizo, but after VAR review, the decision was downgraded to a yellow card.

Palmeiras’ victory marks the end of a goal-scoring drought in Group A, after both their previous match against FC Porto and Al Ahly’s opener against Inter Miami ended goalless.
