**DOHA, Qatar** – Iran launched a missile attack on the US-run Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday, prompting swift responses from Qatari and US forces. According to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the attack was a “powerful” response to US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend.
Qatar’s Defense Ministry stated that its air defenses “successfully” intercepted the majority of the missiles. Deputy Chief of Staff for Joint Operations, Shayeq bin Misfir Al Hajri, confirmed that 11 out of 12 missiles were shot down, with one missile landing at the Al Udeid Air Base, causing no casualties.
The attack has triggered a wave of international reactions. Qatar expressed surprise at the attack, citing its commitment to diplomacy and good neighborliness. Other nations, including Egypt, condemned the attack as a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty. Iraq has called for de-escalation and a return to dialogue. Kuwait and Bahrain temporarily closed their airspaces before reopening them.
US President Donald Trump thanked Iran for providing “early notice,” stating that no Americans were harmed and minimal damage occurred. He expressed hope for “Peace and Harmony in the Region” and encouraged Israel to reciprocate. The US Embassy in Qatar lifted its shelter-in-place order.
However, tensions remain high. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that Iran would not accept any violations. The Iranian parliament is considering a bill to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). There are also reports that Iran may be pressuring criminal gangs in Sweden to carry out attacks against US and Israeli interests, prompting the US Embassy in Sweden to issue a security alert.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials indicated that military operations in Iran are nearing completion and expressed a desire to avoid a war of attrition. House Speaker Mike Johnson defended President Trump’s decision to strike Iranian nuclear sites.
Amid the escalating tensions, President Trump’s Middle East envoy has reportedly remained in contact with Iranian officials in an attempt to find a diplomatic resolution.
Oil prices initially spiked, but then plunged sharply after the interception of the missiles, alleviating concerns about a significant disruption in energy supplies. The FBI is also adjusting its resources to focus on potential threats to the US homeland.
