**Botafogo Advances to Club World Cup Last 16 Despite Loss to Atletico Madrid**

**London, UK – June 23, 2025** – Botafogo secured their place in the Club World Cup’s Round of 16 despite a narrow 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid. The Brazilian side’s resilient defense proved too difficult for Atletico to crack, preventing the Spanish giants from achieving the three-goal victory needed to advance.

Atletico dominated possession and created numerous chances, finishing the game with an xG of 3.05 and 23 shots, 17 inside the box. However, Botafogo’s goalkeeper, John, produced a stellar performance, frustrating Atletico’s attackers.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone introduced Antoine Griezmann at halftime, and the veteran forward quickly injected life into the attack, nearly scoring immediately with a shot that hit the post. Alexander Sorloth also missed a clear header from close range.

Griezmann eventually broke the deadlock in the game’s dying minutes, firing home a well-placed shot from inside the box, however, it was too late to save Atletico’s campaign.

The game also featured a controversial VAR decision. Julian Alvarez was seemingly tripped in the box, initially leading to a penalty. However, after review, the referee awarded a free-kick to Botafogo due to a prior push by Sorloth.

With Paris St-Germain beating Seattle, Botafogo finished second in Group B. They will now face the winners of Group A in the last 16, most likely Inter Miami or Palmeiras. Atletico Madrid is eliminated from the tournament.
