Sun Jun 22 17:18:24 UTC 2025: ## Cambodia Halts Thai Fuel Imports Amidst Escalating Border Tensions
**Phnom Penh, Cambodia** – Cambodia has announced an immediate halt to all fuel imports from Thailand, effective midnight Sunday, further escalating tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations. Prime Minister Hun Manet announced the drastic measure via social media, citing the ability of Cambodian energy companies to source fuel from alternative sources.
The move comes in the wake of a recent border incident in which a Cambodian soldier was killed, reigniting long-standing disputes over undemarcated sections of the 817km (508-mile) border. The two countries have already closed several border checkpoints and crossings in response to the incident.
Adding to the friction, Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry issued a warning urging Cambodian citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to Thailand, while Thailand’s consular affairs department cautioned Thai nationals in Cambodia to stay clear of “protest areas.”
The border dispute has triggered political turmoil in Thailand. A leaked phone call between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen, revealing pressure on Shinawatra from within Thailand, led to the resignation of a key coalition partner, the Bhumjaithai Party.
While Shinawatra claims she retains the support of her remaining coalition partners and is focused on maintaining political stability, a rally demanding her resignation has been scheduled for June 28th. The political crisis is linked to Shinawatra’s influential father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
The escalating tensions mark a significant low point in Cambodian-Thai relations and raise concerns about regional stability.
