CINCINNATI – Despite a 12-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, the Cincinnati Reds are demonstrating positive momentum, winning 10 of their last 14 games. The team is currently just a game out of the third wild-card spot in the National League.
Among the Reds’ rising stars is right-handed pitching prospect Chase Burns. Burns has quickly advanced through the minor leagues and could beat the 416 day turn around time of Rhett Lowder.
Infielder Matt McLain, after a slow start to the season following a shoulder injury, is showing signs of improvement.
As the All-Star break approaches, Elly De La Cruz is almost certain to head to Atlanta for his second All-Star appearance, but Andrew Abbott and TJ Friedl are strong candidates. Abbott is proving that velocity isn’t everything on a fastball, and Friedl ranks highly among National League outfielders.
On the other hand, outfielder Encarnacion-Strand who just returned from the IL has seen a dip in production after a hot start. Relievers Luis Mey and Zach Maxwell still have more progress to be made. Nick Martinez is also in a downward trend, which could make him an attractive trade piece.
