**New Delhi – June 22, 2025** – A coalition of five Left parties in India has issued a strong condemnation of U.S. airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, calling the move a violation of Iranian sovereignty and the UN Charter. The strikes, which occurred overnight on June 22, 2025, targeted three Iranian nuclear sites, including the underground enrichment facility at Fordo, according to satellite imagery released by Planet Labs PBC.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, Revolutionary Socialist Party, and Forward Bloc released a joint statement asserting the U.S. and Israel were falsely justifying the attacks by claiming Iran was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon. They cited statements by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, who stated on June 19th that there was no proof of a systematic Iranian effort to develop nuclear weapons. They also noted that even U.S. intelligence agencies lacked conclusive evidence and that Iran remains a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The Left parties further alleged that Israel initiated attacks on Iran on June 12th to disrupt potential negotiations between Iran and the U.S. and that the U.S. has now joined Israel in this act of aggression. They accused the “U.S.-Israel axis” of disregarding intelligence assessments and diplomatic processes, with the real intention being to destroy Iran, establish imperialist hegemony over West Asia, and control global resources.
The statement drew parallels to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, alleging it was based on similarly unverified claims. The parties also questioned the U.S.’s moral authority to speak on nuclear threats, given its own history as the only nation to have used nuclear weapons in war.
The Left parties warned that the U.S. attack would likely escalate the conflict, with disastrous implications for global peace and the livelihoods of ordinary people, particularly in countries like India, which are heavily reliant on West Asia for oil imports and migrant labor opportunities. They called on the Indian government to abandon its pro-U.S., pro-Israel foreign policy and join international efforts to stop the war.
CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby posted on X, stating, “The economic and political fallout will be global, including for India. The U.S. has proved itself to be the No. 1 rogue state,” urging protest actions.
The U.S. has not yet responded to the Indian Left parties’ statement. President Trump has warned of additional strikes if Iran retaliates. The situation remains tense and the global community is watching closely for further developments.
