**CHENNAI, June 22, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government announced today a significant investment in road infrastructure, allocating billions of rupees to upgrade and expand the state’s road network. Since the launch of the Chief Minister’s Road Development Scheme in 2021, ₹3,858 crore has been allocated for 448 km of four-lane roads and ₹2,207 crore for 1,681 km of two-lane roads.

According to an official release, work is currently underway on 383 km of four-lane roads at a cost of ₹2,807 crore and 357 km of two-lane roads at a cost of ₹709 crore. The Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme has seen an allocation of ₹17,154 crore for 9,620 km of road projects and ₹1,161 crore for 996 bridge/culvert projects.

Significant improvements have also been made to existing infrastructure. The pavement surface of 6,805 km of roads has been improved at a cost of ₹2,074 crore, and 1,652 road safety projects have been completed for ₹662 crore. Ten bypass roads, including those in Manachanallur and Coonoor, have been completed at a total cost of ₹307.8 crore.

The government has also focused on upgrading existing infrastructure, including expanding the Vandalur-Walajabad Road to six lanes for ₹180.09 crore and allocating ₹1,372 crore for converting 1,049 causeways into high-level bridges. Twenty-eight bridges have been constructed with NABARD loan assistance and state funding.
