Fri Jun 20 10:52:13 UTC 2025: ## J&K Chief Minister Questions Israel’s Motives, Demands Water Rights

**Jammu, June 20, 2025** – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today questioned the rationale behind Israel’s recent attack on Iran, stating, “War anywhere is not a good thing. What exactly did Iran do that forced Israel to attack?” Speaking at a press conference following the inauguration of the “Raabta” outreach office in Jammu, Abdullah highlighted the plight of over 6,000 Indians trapped in the conflict zone, including 1,400 from Jammu and Kashmir. He assured that efforts are underway to evacuate them, with 90 students already safely returned and another 400 relocated to safer areas.

The Chief Minister also addressed the issue of water rights, firmly asserting that Jammu and Kashmir should have priority access to its own water resources before any surplus is diverted to other states. He stated that no approval will be given for the central government’s proposal to construct a canal transferring water to Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, citing current water scarcity issues in Jammu. “Let us be allowed to use our water first, then we will talk about others,” Abdullah declared. He pointed to past instances where Punjab failed to share water with Jammu and Kashmir during times of need.

Regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, Abdullah mentioned ongoing projects like the Tulbul Barrage and the pumping of water from the Chenab River to address Jammu’s drinking water needs. He also expressed optimism that the central government, led by Prime Minister Modi, will fulfill its promise to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Responding to criticism from PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on the issue of reservation in government services, Abdullah accused her of “fake sympathy” and highlighted her previous silence on the matter. He confirmed that the Law Department is currently reviewing a report on reservation, which will be followed by Cabinet discussions.
