**Appeals Court Sides with Trump on National Guard Deployment in California; Newsom Vows Legal Fight**
Los Angeles, CA – A federal appeals court has sided with the Trump administration, ruling that President Trump can maintain control of the National Guard troops deployed in Los Angeles amidst ongoing immigration protests. The decision overturns a lower court ruling that favored California Governor Gavin Newsom, who argues the deployment is an overreach of presidential power.
The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, in a unanimous decision, stated that Trump acted within his authority in ordering the National Guard to “protect federal personnel performing federal functions and to protect federal property.” The ruling comes as Los Angeles enters its second night of curfew amid heightened tensions over federal immigration policies.
President Trump hailed the decision as a “BIG WIN” on his Truth Social platform, asserting the federal government’s right to provide protection when state and local authorities are unable.
Governor Newsom, however, condemned the ruling and vowed to continue the legal challenge. He asserted that the former president is not above the law. The State of California argues that Trump’s order was illegal because it did not follow the procedure of being issued through the governor.
The court acknowledged that while it upheld Trump’s authority to federalize the National Guard, its decision does not address the specific activities in which the troops can engage, hinting Newsom could challenge the use of the National Guard and Marines under other laws.
