Fri Jun 20 15:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Mariners DFA Rowdy Tellez, Activate Luke Raley from IL

**Seattle, WA -** The Seattle Mariners announced today that they have designated first baseman Rowdy Tellez for assignment. The move makes room for outfielder/first baseman Luke Raley, who returns from a seven-week stint on the injured list due to an oblique strain.

Tellez, 30, had served as the Mariners’ primary first baseman this season, hitting 11 home runs. While he showed flashes of power after a slow start, his low batting average and on-base percentage, coupled with defensive limitations and a lack of speed, ultimately led to the decision. In his last 162 plate appearances dating back to April 11th, Tellez slashed .229/.265/.484.

Raley’s return provides the Mariners with versatility, as he can play both first base and the outfield. He’ll likely platoon with veteran Donovan Solano at first base for the time being. Solano has recently improved his batting average. However, the Mariners are expected to explore the trade market for a right-handed hitting first baseman to solidify the position.

The move could also lead to other roster adjustments. If Dominic Canzone, currently in right field, struggles, Raley could shift to the outfield, potentially opening the door for prospect Tyler Locklear to get a shot at first base. Alternatively, the Mariners could seek a more established upgrade through a trade.
