Tue Jun 10 16:41:55 UTC 2025: ## Indian Student’s Detention at Newark Airport Sparks Diplomatic Concerns
**New Delhi, June 11, 2025** – A video circulating online showing an Indian student seemingly detained and restrained at Newark Liberty International Airport in the U.S. has triggered a diplomatic response from India. The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi issued a statement yesterday reiterating its commitment to welcoming “legitimate travelers” while firmly stating that it “will not tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or the violation of U.S. law.”
The video, shared by NRI Kunal Jain, depicts a young man, reportedly from Haryana, being handcuffed and allegedly deported. Jain described the scene as a “human tragedy” and expressed feeling “helpless and heartbroken.”
The Ministry of External Affairs has formally raised the issue with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. The Indian Embassy in Washington D.C. and the Indian Consulate in New York are also engaging with American authorities to gather more information. According to an official source, “We have so far not received any details about the incident or the circumstance… We continue to follow the matter.”
This incident follows the repatriation of 388 Indian nationals from the U.S. since January 2025, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressing the issue in the Rajya Sabha in March. Of those, 333 were deported directly from the U.S., while 55 were deported through Panama.
The incident at Newark Airport underscores the ongoing tension between the U.S.’s immigration policies and the aspirations of Indian students seeking opportunities abroad. The Indian government is seeking clarification and ensuring due process for its citizens within the U.S. legal framework.
