Wed Jun 11 19:49:34 UTC 2025: ## Delhi University Orders Safety Checks Following Recent Incidents

**New Delhi – June 12, 2025:** Delhi University (DU) has mandated thorough safety inspections across all its colleges, departments, and hostels following a series of incidents raising concerns about campus infrastructure. A circular issued by the DU administration directs principals, department heads, hostel in-charges, and librarians to conduct immediate and comprehensive checks.

The directive comes after a recent fire broke out in the library of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce and another in the Geology department earlier this week. Initial reports indicate the library fire was caused by a short circuit, while computers caught fire in the Geology department. In April, a faculty member at Kalindi College sustained injuries when a ceiling fan collapsed in a classroom.

“Yesterday, there was a fire in the Geology department. Recently, a fan had also fallen,” Ms. Rajni, whose name was not specified in the circular, told The Hindu. “We issued the circular to ensure that such incidents are avoided and that everything is in check by the time students return from their vacations and the new batch begins.”

The circular specifically instructs departments to inspect all rooms and toilets, verifying the functionality of critical infrastructure including fire extinguishers, lifts, ramps for Persons with Disabilities, electrical fixtures, and water supply systems.

“Please see that all the roofs and walls are in a proper and safe condition, all the electrical fittings, like fans, lights are in working condition and there is ample supply of drinking water and water in the toilet,” the circular stated. The university aims to ensure a safe environment for students returning after the vacation break.
