Tue Jun 03 10:38:16 UTC 2025: ## Kannada Film Release Threatened as Language Controversy Erupts Around Kamal Haasan
**Bengaluru, June 3, 2025** – The release of the Kamal Haasan-starrer “Thug Life” is facing significant hurdles in Karnataka due to a controversy sparked by comments made by the actor regarding the origins of the Kannada language. Veteran BJP leader and former Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa has publicly slammed Haasan for “speaking insensitively” about Kannada, demanding a respectful apology to the Kannada-speaking people.
Haasan’s statement, claiming that “Kannada was born out of Tamil” during a promotional event, has ignited widespread outrage among pro-Kannada organizations and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). Yediyurappa, in a strongly worded post on X, stated that Kannada’s distinct and independent origins are well-established by linguistic experts. He condemned Haasan’s remarks, characterizing them as disruptive to peace and harmony.
The KFCC has announced it will not permit the screening of “Thug Life” in Karnataka unless Haasan issues a public apology.
Raajkamal Films International, Haasan’s production company, has filed a petition with the Karnataka High Court seeking police protection to ensure the smooth release of the film, which is scheduled to premiere on June 5th.
Haasan has so far declined to apologize, maintaining his belief in law and justice and asserting his genuine love for Karnataka. The stand-off continues as tensions rise surrounding the highly anticipated film.
