Panem enthusiasts, mark your calendars! Lionsgate has confirmed that the sixth installment in the blockbuster “Hunger Games” franchise, “Sunrise on the Reaping,” is slated to hit theaters on November 20, 2026. The film, based on Suzanne Collins’ upcoming prequel novel, will delve into the harrowing events of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
Set 24 years before the original “Hunger Games” trilogy, “Sunrise on the Reaping” will explore themes of propaganda and control, drawing inspiration from David Hume’s concept of “implicit submission.” The story follows a young Haymitch Abernathy as he navigates the brutal arena.
A new cast of actors has been assembled to portray familiar characters in their younger years. Joseph Zada steps into the role of Haymitch Abernathy, previously played by Woody Harrelson. Whitney Peak will portray Haymitch’s girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird. Mckenna Grace will play Maysilee Donner, and Jesse Plemons has been cast as Plutarch Heavensbee. Kelvin Harrison Jr. joins as Beetee, Maya Hawke as Wiress, and Lili Taylor as Mags. Ben Wang will play Wyatt Callow, and Molly McCann and Iona Bell will portray Louella and Lou Lou, respectively. Ralph Fiennes is set to portray President Snow. Elle Fanning will portray Effie Trinket, and Kieran Culkin will take on the role of Caesar Flickerman.
Franchise veteran Francis Lawrence, who directed “Catching Fire” and both “Mockingjay” films, will return to direct. Billy Ray, who adapted the original “Hunger Games” novel for the big screen, will pen the screenplay. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producing, with Cameron MacConomy serving as executive producer.
With the first five “Hunger Games” films grossing over $3.3 billion worldwide, expectations are high for “Sunrise on the Reaping” to deliver another thrilling and thought-provoking chapter in the dystopian saga.
