**Guwahati, Assam – June 1, 2025** – Assam Congress president-designate Gaurav Gogoi launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led state government on Sunday, accusing them of prioritizing power, money, land grabbing, and syndicate politics over the needs of the people. His remarks come as Assam grapples with severe floods and landslides that have claimed the lives of 30 people since May 29.

Gogoi alleges that widespread encroachment on wetlands by ministers and individuals close to the ruling party is a primary cause of the devastating floods and waterlogging that have crippled Guwahati, the state capital. He specifically pointed to Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, alleging that he encroached on a portion of the Bondajan channel to build a road to his residence.

“Greed for money and land is driving the BJP policy in Guwahati,” Gogoi told reporters. “BJP ministers care more about the road to their own house than preserving water bodies and building drainage systems.”

Gogoi, currently the Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, embarked on a 250-km procession from Sivasagar to Nagaon, accompanied by thousands of supporters. The procession will pass through Jorhat and Golaghat, aiming to connect with party workers and constituents across multiple districts.

He vowed to expose corruption within the state, particularly within Guwahati development departments, promising a series of revelations in the coming days. Gogoi also acknowledged the disappointing performance of all opposition parties in the recent panchayat elections, calling for a review and stressing the need to strengthen the Congress party to create a stronger opposition front.

The newly appointed Congress leader is replacing Bhupen Kumar Borah as the state president. He will officially take charge on Tuesday at the party headquarters in Guwahati. This comes amidst attacks from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has been questioning Gogoi’s wife’s alleged connections to Pakistan’s ISI.
