**MADURAI, INDIA – May 28, 2025** – A special court in Madurai has sentenced three individuals to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for smuggling 28 kg of ganja in the Madurai district in 2021. The Principal Special Court for Essential Commodities and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act Cases delivered the verdict on Wednesday.
Judge M. Chenkamalaselvan found G. Murugan, J. Ravikumar, and P. Sathiyenthiran guilty and also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh (approximately $1200 USD) on each of them. K. Rajkumar, another accused in the case, was acquitted. The trial for E. Kameshwaran, another individual implicated, is still pending.
The case stemmed from a vehicle check conducted by Keerathurai police on Chintamani road. Authorities seized a car and a two-wheeler used in the smuggling operation.
This sentencing underscores the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.
