**Heavy Rains, Strong Winds Expected to Lash Coastal Karnataka, Causing Damage and Disruption**
**Mangaluru, May 28, 2025:** Coastal Karnataka is bracing for another bout of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts are expected to bear the brunt of the weather on Thursday, May 29th, with sustained winds of 40-50 kmph accompanying the downpour. Udupi district is also predicted to experience heavy to very heavy rain with similar wind speeds.
The IMD has issued warnings for continued heavy rainfall through June 1st, albeit with slightly reduced wind speeds.
The recent spell of intense weather has already caused significant damage. In the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday morning, ten houses were damaged in Udupi district, with Kundapur taluk being the most affected. Udupi recorded a substantial 77.5 mm of rainfall during this period.
Dakshina Kannada has also experienced substantial damage, with seven houses partially damaged and two completely destroyed in Bantwal taluk. The region recorded 52.4 mm of rainfall, significantly exceeding the normal rainfall of 10.9 mm for the period. Since the start of the year, Dakshina Kannada has recorded a staggering 803.8 mm of rainfall, compared to the normal 211.1 mm.
The heavy rains and winds have also impacted infrastructure, with 225 electric poles and 13 transformers belonging to Mescom damaged in Dakshina Kannada. Over 11 kilometers of power supply lines have been affected, and two bridges have also sustained damage.
Residents in the affected districts are advised to take necessary precautions and stay informed about weather updates. Emergency services are on alert to respond to any further incidents.
