**Brazilian Prosecutors Sue BYD Over Alleged Slave Labor Conditions**

**Sao Paulo, May 28, 2025** – Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD Auto is facing a lawsuit in Brazil over allegations of slave-like labor conditions and international human trafficking at a construction site for its new factory. The lawsuit, filed by Brazilian labor prosecutors in Bahia state, seeks 257 million Brazilian reais ($50 million) in damages from BYD, China JinJiang Construction Brazil, and Tecmonta Equipamentos Inteligentes.

The investigation, which culminated in the rescue of 220 Chinese workers last year, revealed that the workers were allegedly brought to Brazil under false pretenses with inappropriate visas. Prosecutors detailed degrading working conditions, including inadequate sleeping arrangements, limited and unsanitary bathroom facilities, with some workers forced to wake up at 4 am for personal hygiene before work, and the co-mingling of personal belongings and food.

BYD has stated it is cooperating with the investigation, respects Brazilian laws and international labor regulations, and will address the specific claims during the probe. In December, a BYD spokesperson dismissed earlier reports of poor conditions as a smear campaign against China. The case highlights growing scrutiny of international labor practices and the responsibilities of multinational corporations.
