**Shivamogga, India – May 22, 2025 -** Celebrations erupted in Hassan on Thursday as writers and activists gathered to honor Hassan resident and Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq, who was recently awarded the prestigious International Booker Prize 2025. Mushtaq shares the award with her translator, Deepa Bhasthi.

A gathering of artists, poets, and activists, including K.T. Shivaprasad, Rupa Hassan, H.K. Sandesh, and Suvarna Shivaprasad, convened at the Kannada Sahitya Parishat office, proudly displaying a banner congratulating Mushtaq.

Attendees lauded the occasion as a landmark moment for Kannada literature, for the state of Karnataka, and particularly for Hassan. They fondly remembered Mushtaq’s active participation in various socio-cultural events within the community, highlighting her dedication as an advocate, journalist, and writer who has consistently championed the rights of women against injustice and exploitation.

The Hassan district Kannada Sahitya Parishat had previously recognized Mushtaq’s contributions by selecting her as president of the 10th district-level Kannada Sahitya Sammelana.

Banu Mushtaq, who accepted the prize in London on May 20th, is scheduled to return to India on May 26th. The event marks a significant achievement for Indian literature on the global stage, highlighting the rich and diverse voices emerging from the region.
