Wed May 21 15:20:00 UTC 2025: **Mumbai Hit by Sudden Downpour, Yellow Alert Issued as Monsoon Approaches**

**Mumbai, India -** Mumbai was lashed by heavy rainfall Tuesday evening, causing traffic disruptions and waterlogging, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Nasik. The alert forecasts light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds (30-40 kmph) across several parts of Maharashtra until May 24th.

The downpour, which coincided with peak travel hours, overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure. Civic records indicate that some areas received over 70 mm of rain within a two-hour period. Jogeshwari recorded the highest rainfall between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM with 63 mm. Andheri subway was temporarily closed due to waterlogging.

The IMD attributes the weather to a cyclonic circulation likely to form over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast. The forecast predicts thunderstorm with moderate to heavy rain in the city and suburbs towards evening/night with occasional gusty winds likely reaching 50-60 kmph.

While the average rainfall recorded between 8 am on May 20 and 8 am on May 21 was 24 mm in the city, 26 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 40 mm in the western suburbs the western suburbs recorded an average of 40 mm rain, followed by 26 mm of rain in the eastern suburbs and 24 mm rain in the island city division.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has warned of high tides of 3.07 metres and 3.79 metres expected at 6.04 am and 6.35 pm, respectively, while low tides of 1.74 metres and 1.71 metres are likely at 11.54 am and 1.25 am (May 22) and advises citizens to take necessary precautions.

In other news, Mumbai police booked a transwoman on extortion charges for allegedly demanding Rs 51,000 under the garb of ‘shagun’ from a businessman.
