**Venezuela Bans Flights from Colombia Amidst Alleged Destabilization Plot Ahead of Elections**

**Caracas, Venezuela – May 20, 2025** – Venezuela has banned all flights arriving from neighboring Colombia, citing a foiled plot to destabilize the country ahead of the upcoming elections scheduled for Sunday, May 25, 2025. The announcement, made by Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, came on the same day that an independent panel backed by the Organization of American States (OAS) released a damning report documenting severe human rights abuses in Venezuela following the disputed July 28 presidential election.

According to Cabello, authorities detained over 30 individuals, including 21 Venezuelans and 17 foreigners (some holding Colombian, Mexican, and Ukrainian citizenship), allegedly involved in a plan to place explosives at embassies and other key facilities. He accused the group of working with members of the Venezuelan political opposition and including “experts in explosive devices, human smugglers and mercenaries.” No evidence was provided to support these claims.

Colombia’s Foreign Ministry stated it had not received any information regarding the detention of Colombian citizens. While the flight ban was initially announced to last beyond the election, the Venezuelan government has reportedly informed Colombia that flights would resume the day after the vote.

The move further intensifies the already tense political climate in Venezuela. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has called for a boycott of the upcoming elections, citing a lack of fair conditions. Her staff, along with other opposition members, had recently sought refuge in a diplomatic compound before departing the country. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it an “international rescue operation,” while the Venezuelan government claims it was a negotiated departure.

The OAS-backed report paints a grim picture of Venezuela post-election, describing a period of “the most severe and sophisticated phase of political repression in Venezuela’s modern history.” The report details executions of unarmed protesters, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and the expansion of repression beyond political opponents to include poll workers, relatives of opposition members, and even minors.

Adding to the complexity, President Nicolás Maduro alleged that members of an Albanian crime organization involved in drug trafficking in Ecuador were also linked to the alleged destabilization plot, adding that an investigation is ongoing. The ban and accusations come as a significant development just days before the elections, raising serious concerns about the stability and fairness of the electoral process in Venezuela.
