A new Netflix documentary, “Untold: The Fall of Favre,” premiering Tuesday, May 20, promises to delve into the complex legacy of Brett Favre, the Mississippi native who rose to NFL stardom with the Green Bay Packers, only to be embroiled in controversy later in his career.

The one-hour feature, part of Netflix’s “Untold” sports series, aims to present a balanced portrait of Favre, exploring his on-field triumphs alongside the scandals that have tarnished his reputation.

Director Rebecca Gitlitz, a two-time Emmy winner, emphasizes the importance of presenting facts and allowing viewers to draw their own conclusions. The film will cover Favre’s career from his college days at Southern Mississippi to his time with the Packers, New York Jets, and Minnesota Vikings, highlighting his immense popularity and influence in Mississippi.

However, the documentary will also address the controversies surrounding Favre, including allegations of sending inappropriate messages to Jenn Sterger, a former New York Jets employee, and his involvement with questionable sports drug companies. Most notably, “The Fall of Favre” will examine his role in the Mississippi welfare scandal, where he is accused of helping divert funds to a volleyball stadium at Southern Miss while his daughter played there. Favre denies any wrongdoing and is a defendant in an ongoing civil lawsuit.

Gitlitz stated that the decision to move forward with the documentary came in 2022, “That’s when I really said there is something much bigger here and that’s when we started going over patterns of (Favre’s) behavior. That’s when we found the pain cream, then we found Jenn (Sterger), then we found Oak Grove, and then it was a series of how do we put this all together.”

Gitlitz added that Favre and his legal team were approached to participate in the film, but declined. She was also limited in her sources for the film because many of those involved in the Mississippi welfare scandal are not allowed to speak on the case.

“Untold: The Fall of Favre” hopes to provide a comprehensive look at the life and career of Brett Favre, encouraging viewers to consider all sides of the story.
