Only Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday granted the Trump administration’s request to remove legal protections for approximately 350,000 Venezuelans, potentially exposing them to deportation.

The court’s order effectively puts on hold a previous ruling by a federal judge in San Francisco that had maintained Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the Venezuelans, which would have otherwise expired last month. The justices did not provide a rationale for their decision, a common practice in emergency appeals. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was the sole dissenting voice.

TPS allows individuals already in the United States to live and work legally if their home countries are deemed unsafe due to natural disasters or civil unrest.

A federal appeals court had previously denied the administration’s request to pause the lower court’s order while the lawsuit continued. The case is one of many emergency appeals the Trump administration has brought before the Supreme Court, particularly concerning immigration matters.

Last week, the administration also asked the court to permit the termination of humanitarian parole for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. This action could also lead to their potential deportation.

The Supreme Court has also been involved in legal battles regarding the Trump administration’s attempts to quickly deport Venezuelans accused of being gang members to a prison in El Salvador, utilizing the 18th-century Alien Enemies Act.

The administration has aggressively sought to withdraw various immigration protections, including ending TPS for a total of 600,000 Venezuelans and 500,000 Haitians.

U.S. District Judge Edward Chen had previously halted those plans, finding that the expiration of TPS would severely disrupt the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and result in billions in lost economic activity.

Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued that Chen’s order interfered with the administration’s authority over immigration and foreign affairs.
